Dreaming of a Better Life, Shenzhen

I was with my Hong Kong friend Alfred in a crowded square in Shenzhen, trying in vain to capture a moment of life in the crowd all around me.

Suddenly, a "shooting window" opened for a small but crucial second. In this narrow angle of view stood this young man leaning on his broom, his gaze lost, indifferent to the frantic agitation around him. Behind him, a fashion poster presenting his opposite. During that very small second, I had time to imagine a story, that of a young cleaning man working hard and dreaming, perhaps, of a better life where he would have the role of the fashion model of the advertising poster behind him...

By the time I press the shutter, the crowd had resumed its place all around me, leaving me only this fleeting memory, but nevertheless immortalized on the "film" of my camera.

 

J'étais avec mon ami hongkongais Alfred sur une place bondée à Shenzhen, tentant vainement de capter un instant de vie au milieu de la foule tout autour de moi.

Soudain, une "fenêtre de tir" s'est ouverte l'espace d'une petite mais cruciale seconde. Dans cet étroit angle de champ se tenait ce jeune homme appuyé sur son balai, le regard perdu, indifférent à l'agitation frénatique autour de lui. Derrière lui, une affiche de mode présentant son opposé. Pendant cette toute petite seconde, j'ai eu le temps de m'imaginer une histoire, celle d'un jeune homme de ménage travaillant durement et rêvant, peut-être, d'une meilleure vie où il aurait le rôle du fashion model de l'affiche publicitaire derrière lui...

Le temps que je presse le déclencheur, la foule avait repris sa place tout autour de moi, ne me laissant que ce souvenir furtif, mais néanmoins immortalisé sur la "pellicule" de mon appareil photo.
